Wolfgang Amadeus’ Fantasy in D was the first “chilling” experience I ever had as a piano student. To me therefore it remains unsurpassed.
We hear it from the Mozartean authority of Mitsuko Uchida.

it was Beethoven that chilled me and am (almost) ashamed to say that I rarely listen to Mozart but hearing this I understand!
Well, I hadn’t played any Beethoven by the time I got my hands on this one!
Still, I find some stuff by Mozart darker than anyone else’s.
Here’s an example :

recent neuropsychiatric evaluation of Mozart’s music, anecdotal behaviour and letters etc suggest that he had Tourette’s or Asperger’s or some such. Certainly he displayed scatological humour and perhaps some of his darker pieces stem from this tendency!
p.s. And in that piece I hear overtones of the Valkyrie
To tell the truth, I do not trust neuropsychiatric evaluation, especially when it comes to music.
In works like this [Cto No 24] or the tremendous Concerto for piano and orchestra No 20 – much admired by Beethoven, Mozart anticipates the Romantic period. I don’t know Wagner’s opinion about this one, but I’d bet he ‘d greatly appreciate it.
Very pretty! On top of everything, you are a classically trained pianist! Amazing!!!!
