MODEST MUSSORGSKY [1839-1881]: KHOVANSHCHINA / BORIS GODOUNOV / PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION

Ακούμε την εισαγωγή από την όπερα Khovanshchina [Mariinsky Theratre Orchestra, Valerie Gergiev], ένα απόσπασμα από την όπερά του Boris Godounov: Scene Du Couronnement [National Symphony Orchestra, M. Rostropovitch] και τέλος, το The Old Castle, από το Pictures At An Exhibition στην πιανιστική βερσιόν [Alfred Brendel].

On this date, March 21, 1839, Modest Mussorgsky was born, the “revolutionist” of the Group of Five [see post RIMSKY KORSAKOV]. He is considered a reformer of Russian music with innovative flares that often look directly into the 20th century. His best-known works are Pictures At An Exhibition’ [written for piano, best known in its orchestral version, arranged by Ravel] and The Night on the Bald Mountain [arranged by Korsakov]. We hear the introduction  from the opera Khovanshchina [Mariinsky Theratre Orchestra, Valerie Gergiev], an excerpt from the opera Boris Godounov: Scene Du Couronnement [National Symphony Orchestra, M. Rostropovitch] and finally, The Old Castle from Pictures At An Exhibition [Alfred Brendel, piano]

Quite heavy duty, especially the vocals by Boris Godounov. That is one serious voice, almost dark. I’d like to hear more of his voice.

Thank you very much Resa! The opera Boris Godounov is fairly regarded as the peak of Mussorgsky’s artistry. The voice on this section belongs to the tenor Kenneth Riegel.
