Το ‘To Love Somebody’ είναι απ’ τον πρώτο δίσκο των Bee Gees, κυκλοφορία του 1967 : την πρώτη φορά που το έπαιξα στο ραδιόφωνο (Εν Λευκώ early ‘00s) δεχόμουν τηλεφωνήματα ακροατών που άκουγαν έκπληκτοι ότι “αυτό το αριστούργημα” είναι δικό τους. Το ‘Grease’ (με ερμηνευτή την Frankie Valli – από το soundtrack της ομώνυμης ταινίας – 1978) έχει αποσπάσει επαίνους απ’ τον Frank Zappa : το είχε συμπεριλάβει (εν μέσω Beefheart, Stravinsky, UK Subs, Penderecki κ.ά.) σε δίωρο ραδιοφωνικό πρόγραμμά του για το Star Special του BBC – 1980. Τέλος, μια από τις προσωπικές μου αδυναμίες, το ‘Secret Trust’, προέρχεται από το κύκνειο άσμα των Αγγλο-Αυστραλών, This Is Where I Came In (2001). 🟡 🟡 Three songs bearing the stamp of Barry Gibb, a genius composer consistently underrated by the pretentious majority of “rock critics.” ‘To Love Somebody’ comes from the Bee Gees’ first album, released in 1967. The first time I played it on the radio (on En Lefko in the early 2000s), I got phone calls from listeners who were shocked and delighted to hear that “this masterpiece” was actually by the Bee Gees. ‘Grease’ (performed by Frankie Valli, from the soundtrack of the film of the same name – 1978) has received praise from Frank Zappa himself: he included it (alongside Beefheart, Stravinsky, UK Subs, Penderecki and others) in his two-hour radio special for BBC’s Star Special in 1980. And finally, one of my personal favorites, ‘Secret Trust’, comes from the Anglo-Australians’ swan-song, This Is Where I Came In (2001).
