📀 📀 📀 One of the (not exactly) collateral benefits of science fiction (and horror) films/series was that it familiarized some of us, very early on, with “prohibitively difficult” sounds: sophisticated melodies/harmonies, harsh atonality, and concrete interpolations found a way to enter us as the underscoring of otherworldly images, acquiring a meaning they would have struggled to gain under different circumstances. The role of music like Ligeti’s in scenes such as those in 2001 cannot be overstated. “Equally” incalculable is the role of films like this in familiarizing us with contemporary musical idioms. For the record, excerpts from Requiem’s Kyrie are heard three times during the film, always accompanying the appearance of the monolith: at the Dawn of Man, in front of the apes; on the surface of the Moon, in front of the astronauts; and in space, near Jupiter, just before Dave’s entry into the Stargate.
