Το δεύτερο είναι από το ‘A Fistful Of Data’, ένα από τα ελάχιστα επεισόδια που σκηνοθέτησε ο ίδιος. Συνθέσεις και τα δυο του Jay Chattaway. Τέλος, το jazz standard του Johnny Green ‘Out of Nowhere’ ενορχηστρωμένο από τον Dennis McCarthy για το επεισόδιο The Big Goodbye. 📀 📀 📀 “All those years I worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company… sitting on the throne of England, it was nothing but preparation for sitting in the captain’s chair on the Enterprise”. Patrick Stewart’s reply to the question “how a Shakespearean actor ended up in a sci-fi series” is historic, while also marking the character of an era: what some of us had known as “high culture” was gradually leaving center stage as its successor took its place… with taste and grace, drawing on the resources of what had come before. Something many people overlook is that Shatner also began his professional career in the theater, performing Shakespearean roles among others.
Patrick Stewart (whom I first saw in the role of Leondegrance, Guinevere’s father in Excalibur) would create an entirely different kind of “captain of the Enterprise.” In contrast to Kirk the primal “hero of action”, within the framework of a Wild West epic transplanted into outer space, the calm, reflective strength of Picard belongs to a universe of institutions in an established democracy, where technology claims an ever greater share of initiative and decision-making. But it was the actor’s personal magnetism, the touch of class, and the talent that made the character he played so beloved… among Trekkies and beyond. We bid him farewell with three landmark pieces from as many episodes of The Next Generation: the first is the theme from the celebrated ‘The Inner Light’, which Stewart particularly loved. The second is from ‘A Fistful of Datas’, one of the very few episodes he directed himself. Both written by Jay Chattaway. Finally, Johnny Green’s jazz standard ‘Out of Nowhere’, arranged by Dennis McCarthy for the episode ‘The Big Goodbye’.

I’m a huge fan of Captain Picard! I first saw Patrick Stewart in the late ’70s in the “I, Claudius” miniseries on PBS.
