THE RESIDENTS : THE KING AND EYE [1989]

Δυο τραγούδια από το The King And Eye, το κλασικό άλμπουμ – “μελέτη” των Residents πάνω στον Elvis. Η ζωντανή του παρουσίαση στο Ρόδον Κλαμπ ήταν μια από τις οριακές εμπειρίες, όχι μόνο δική μου, ως concert goer.
Two songs from
The King And Eye, the classic Residents’ album – “study” on Elvis. Its live performance in Rodon Club, Athens, was one of the paramount experiences, not just for me, as a concert goer.

00:00 Heartbreak Hotel 01:56 Devil In Disguise

Well, since my baby left me
Well, I found a new place to dwell
Well, it’s down at the end of lonely street
At heartbreak hotel
Well, I’ll be
I’ll be so lonely, baby
Well, I’m so lonely
I’ll be so lonely, I could die
Oh, although it’s always crowded
You still can find some room
For broken hearted lovers
To cry there in their gloom
They’ll be so
They’ll be so lonely, baby
Well, they’re so lonely
They’re so lonely, they could die
Now, the bell hop’s tears keep flowin’
And the desk clerk’s dressed in black
Well, they been so long on lonely street
They’ll never ever look back
And it’s so
Well, it’s so lonely, baby
Well, they’re so lonely
Well, they’re so lonely, they could’ve died
Well, if your baby leaves you
You got a tale to tell
Well, just take a walk down lonely street
To heartbreak hotel
Where you will be
You’ll be so lonely, baby
Well you’ll be lonely
You’ll be so lonely you could die
Oh, although it’s always crowded
You still can find some room
For broken hearted lovers
To cry there in their gloom
They’ve been so
They’re be so lonely, baby
Well, they’re so lonely
They’ll be so lonely, they could die

Look like an angel
You walk like an angel
And you talk like an angel
But I got wise
You’re the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
Devil in disguise
When you fooled me with your kisses
You cheated and you schemed
Heaven knows how you lied to me
You’re not the way you seemed
Cause you look like an angel
And you walk like an angel
And you talk like an angel too
But I got wise
You’re the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
Well I thought that I was in heaven
But I was so surprised
Heaven help me, I didn’t see
The devil in your eyes
You look like an angel
And you walk like an angel
Oh, and you talk just like an angel
But I got wise
Cause you’re the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
You’re the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
Baby why, tell me why
Are you the devil in disguise
I want to know
Tell me why
But don’t you hurt me no more cause
You’re the devil….

Wow!! That performance was incredible. I just checked out The Residents’ website to learn more about them.

You should’ve seen this entire work presented live!
The Residents are one of the most interesting acts ever to come out of the American alternative scene.
      Thank you!

Eye Eye Captain Jerk. Those are devilishly wonderful songs. I like this version of Heartbreak Hotel better than the King’s. Nothing against Elvis, GRHS, he was great, but Heartbreak Hotel was not one of my favorite Elvis songs. How many devils have you found disguised as angels? I can’t count them all.

      Oh, they are countless indeed.
      These Residents interpretations are unique.
But I do love Elvis very much. Heartbreak Hotel is not one of my favorite either, but it was one of those I used to practice my voice on, when I was little. It’s much much harder than it seems [to me anyway]. Other such songs from the Elvis catalogue were Hound Dog & Suspicious Minds. You learn a lot trying to “emulate” the King.
      Thank you!

Elvis and Johnny Cash have deceptively large vocal ranges. Doing parodies I have found new respect for a lot of singers whose vocals seem simple and effortless, but they end up being really difficult. I mentioned Johnny Cash because when I recorded Ghost Mousies In The Sky with Teagan’s parody lyrics to Ghost Riders In The Sky, I had a really hard time getting the song down between the vocal range and the meter. It’s a difficult song that sounds so simple. Prince is another artist who I liked, but never paid close attention to the music until I did parodies of When Dove’s Cry and Purple Rain. His music and rhythms are much more complex than they seem as a casual listener.

it sure is. I was never a big fan of Prince but I always had an appreciation for his craftsmanship. Miles Davis’ fondness about him tells a lot.
Cash is another great vocal reference. My personal top includes also Iggy Pop, Bowie, Ferry, Peter Hammill, Peter Gabriel, Ian Anderson …and some Greek singers.

Great song on the video. It reminds me of our folk dancing years. We did a lot of Greek dances to like music. I have to agree on your list. Did you hear the parody of Iggy Pop’s “Candy” we called “Kitty”? It was a major collaboration. Doing Iggy’s part was quite challenging for me: https://wp.me/p1yQyy-5CE

This isn’t apparent, judging from the very good result !
I used to sing “The Passenger” and “Wild Child” [Iggy’s version] with the party band in the ’90s. The “party band” was the final incarnation of the original band, based strictly in originals. It was sad in a way, but it had some advantages – more money for starters. I’ve even covered “Born To Be Wild” and “Magic Carpet Ride” on a Harley Davidson party!😄

I had to work hard to get my part of kitty to sound decent. I read that Born To Be Wild had the first reference to Heavy Metal with “Heavy Metal Thunder”. When I played in a bank in the 70s the required tunes to get gigs were “Proud Mary” (I hate that song), “La Bamba” and “Brown Eyed Girl” (God save us). My brother-in-law who still plays bass in various bands around town said people still request those three songs and people come out out of the woodwork like cockroaches to fill the dance floor when they play those songs. The “same as it ever was” syndrome just makes one want to barf.

I agree. On the other hand, I sometimes feel that …even this particular syndrome is better than the constant change …in the name of change, with no reason at all.

Change for change sake often gets us nowhere. I’m probably a cranky old hypocrite complaining about music I don’t like and thinking it should have been shelved after the first play, because I love the persistence of good music, and I listen to a lot of the same old songs I like.

    Brilliant renditions!
How did I not know of this band?
“Devil in Disguise” is a devil of an elucidation .. love!

For some reason, I was confused at first. I got “Devil in Her Heart” in my memory.

They are not well known unfortunately. Too smart for mainstream, I guess.
