SEX PISTOLS : JOHNNY B GOODE / ROADRUNNER [1980]

Πρόβα των Sex Pistols, από το “μεταθανάτιο” νοκιμαντέρ – άλμπουμ The Great Rock’n’Roll Swindle.
Από το
“Johnny B. Goode” του Chuck Berry, το οποίο ο Johnny διακόπτει γιατί “το μισεί”, στο “Roadrunner” του Jonathan Richman, του οποίου όπως διαπιστώνει “δεν ξέρει τα λόγια”.
Αυτό δεν εμποδίζει το συγκεκριμένο track να είναι, με τον δικό του τρόπο, συναρπαστικό.

Sex Pistols rehearsal, from the “posthumous” documentary – album The Great Rock’n’ Roll Swindle.
From Chuck Berry’s
“Johnny B Goode”, which Johnny stops because “he hates it”, to Jonathan Richman’s “Roadrunner”, whose words, as he finds out, he doesn’t know.
This does not prevent the track from being fascinating.

Duh ug duh duh duh duh mah eyah
I donno the words
I donno’ow it starts, I’ve forgotten it
Hold on
Stop the segment
Stop, stop, stop, stop
Check out what how it starts
What’s the first line?
One, two, three, four, five, six
Alright, can you start at the beginning, then?
Roadrunner, roadrunner, It’s not ‘ard

Roadrunner, roadrunner, go…
Going thousand miles an hour

In love with the modern world
Alright, here we go now
Goin’ twenty-eight watta power
It’s all cold here in the dark
Fifty thousand watts of power
Agoin’ thousand miles an hour
Awith the radio on
Roadrunner, roadrunner
Oh, God, I don’t know it
It’s fucking ridiculous
Wish I had the words…
Roadrunner, roadrunner
Agoin’ thousand miles an hour
I felt in touch with the modern world
I fell in love with the modern world
Rockin’ modern lover, modern sound, ana mosaround

Well, that was shambolic. Have you ever seen an interview with Johnny Rotten? He has to be one of the funniest people on the planet. He takes sarcasm and insult to a high art.

Well, he used to be my idol when I was in my teens, I know [almost] everything about him, including his recent [2017] support for Trump!

That was a great performance. I never liked Johnnie B Goode much, but it’s really quite good with nonsense blabbering for the lyrics. I thought the Roadrunner song turned out really well.

Indeed! These guys weren’t “virtuosos” but they surely knew how to deliver the goods!
