Στα εικοοσιδύο χρόνια της εκστατικής τροχιάς τους, οι Ramones κατέρριψαν όλες τις αερολογίες των “θεωρητικών” περί καλλιτέχνη που “οφείλει” να εξελίσσεται, να μεταμορφώνεται, και να πλουτίζει τα εκφραστικά του μέσα, ώστε να ανανεώνει το ενδιαφέρον του κοινού του. Αυτό που έδειξαν ήταν ότι το ταλέντο είναι κάτι πολύ μυστήριο για να το κλείσεις σε ταμπέλες και οδηγίες προς ναυτιλομένους. Κι ότι το “θαυμάσιο”, ως κατάσταση του μυαλού, βρίσκεται πέραν των μέσων που χρησιμοποιείς για να το φτάσεις. Για τους Ramones αυτά τα μέσα παρέμειναν ίδια και απαράλλαχτα: ο μονολιθικός τους ήχος, η ωστική δύναμη του punk και μια απλούστατη αλλά ποτέ απλοϊκή, Beach Boys-oriented μελωδκή αντίληψη. Και ήταν περισσότερο από αρκετά. 🟡 🟡 In the twenty-two years of their ecstatic orbit, Ramones shot down all the BS talk of the theorists, about an artist who “needs” to evolve, transform, and enrich his expressive means in order to renew the interest of his/her audience. What they showed was that talent is something too mysterious to put on labels and instructions. And that “wonderful”, as a state of mind, lies beyond the means you use to reach it. For the Ramones, these means remained the same till the end: a monolithic sound, the impulse power of punk and a simple, but never simple-minded melodic approach, Beach Boys oriented. And they were more than enough.
