RAVEL : GASPARD DE LA NUIT – ONDINE

🟡 🟡 The composer, preserved on a 1922 piano roll – a technology strikingly reminiscent of the punch cards of early computers! – gives an incomparable performance of ‘Ondine’, opening movement of his enchanting suite Gaspard de la Nuit.

I’m intrigued to know how the piano roll captured dynamics! I didn’t think they could do that…

There is a thin metal or carbon rod under each of the “recording piano”‘s keys. When the key is pressed, the rod dips into a small cup of mercury, creating an electrical contact. The depth and speed of the key’s descent determines the contact’s strength and duration.
Computers are one of my “fields of research”. And I can firmly state that impressive achievements in the field had already been made by mid-to-late 19th century.

Oh yes. IBM’s role in the persecution of the Jews during the Third Reich …excluded from the above achievements.
