HERBIE HANCOCK B-DAY PODCAST

Αυτό χάρη στην “ποπ” πλευρά του [“I Thought It Was You”, “Rockit”, ηχογραφήσεις με Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon κλπ.] “The Naked Camera” από το soundtrack του Blow-Up [1967]. “Jessica” στη live έκδοση από το μνημειώδες V.S.O.P. The Quintet [1977] και τέλος, “Succotash” από το modal άλμπουμ του, Inventions & Dimensions [1963]

On this date, 80 years ago, the great pianist and composer Herbie Hancock was born in Chicago. He is one of jazz’s few truly “recognizable” contemporary musicians, thanks to his “pop” side [“I Thought It Was You”, “Rockit”, recordings with Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon etc.] which of course is the icing, in a career full of classic albums and historical collaborations, starting with Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet (1964-68). The selections: “Watermelon Man” in the Headhunters version [1973]. “The Naked Camera” from his soundtrack for Antonioni’s Blow-Up [1967]. “Jessica” in the live version from the monumental V.S.O.P. The Quintet [1977] and finally, “Succotash” from his modal album Inventions & Dimensions [1963]

Such a giant of Jazz! I love playing his ‘Watermelon Man’ both on piano and on sax – I only wish I could do both at the same time! 😀

I know a little bit about this feeling. I was trying in my teens to recreate “Watcher Of The Skies”, covering Banks’ and Gabriel’s parts simultaneously. It was good exercise. Much easier than the impossible tusk of yours, of course : – ) …Thanks!

What a genius! I love it all! The soundtrack from Blow Up is phenomenal! Thank you, and he is so cool, and it’s crazy that he is 80!

Yes it is! I couldn’t believe it either. But he’s in perfect shape, physically and musically! Thank you Resa!
