Born at a time when the career of professional composer was unthinkable for a woman, Felix Mendelssohn’s sister Fanny was involved in the composition of mostly piano pieces, on the margins of her role as “obedient daughter” initially, mother and wife afterwards. She was fortunate to see some of it published under the name of her famous brother Felix, who loved and supported her.
Das Jahr [The Year] is a cycle of 12 pieces by Fanny Mendelssohn referring to the twelve months of the year. We hear, of course, “September, At the River”. Performed by Jennifer Eley.
