ROLLING STONES : GIMME SHELTER [LET IT BLEED, 1969]

CHARLIE WATTS R.I.P.

Ooh, a storm is threatening
My very life today
If I don’t get some shelter
Ooh yeah I’m gonna fade awayWar, children
It’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
War, children
It’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot awayOoh, see the fire is sweepin’
Our streets today
Burns like a red coal carpet
Mad bull lost its wayWar, children
It’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
War, children
It’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot awayRape, murder, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
Rape, murder, yeah, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
Rape, murder, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot awayMmm, a flood is threatening
My very life today
Gimme, gimme shelter
Or I’m gonna fade awayWar, children
It’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot awayI tell you love, sister
It’s just a kiss away
It’s just a kiss away
It’s just a kiss away
It’s just a kiss away
It’s just a kiss away
Kiss away, kiss away

Indeed. I liked this guy very much – more than the others in the band.

He did seem to be steadier than Mick and Keith, in particular. I became disgusted with the Rolling Stones when they hyped their farewell tour to high heaven, with ticket prices to their show at the Hampton Coloseum to match. The year of said farewell performance? 1978.

To tell you the truth, I never really liked [especially] Mick Jagger as a character – the RS music legacy is a totally different story.

I have to agree about Mick Jagger, “character” being the operative word. Is there a real person in there anywhere?

Judging from the cover, nobody I ‘d like to know…

Thank you for this. I adore this song.
Norm and the guys did a 20 minute version of it a couple of weeks ago.
    It was brilliant!
    RIP, Charlie!

The only time I saw them live was in 1998 in Athens. I would call the performance of “this particular song” the high point of my career as a concert goer. And it’s been a rich one, I can assure you of that.
