Ο Lorin Maazel διευθύνει την Orchestre Nationale De France. 🟡 🟡 Sergei Prokofiev wrote his First Symphony (“Classical”) at the age of 26. It is scored for classically-sized orchestra and modelled on Joseph Haydn’s symphonic style. It contains of course passages unimaginable for the late 18th century. The Orchestre Nationale De France is conducted by Lorin Maazel.

This was the first Prokofiev piece I bought as a tape and listened to avidly as a teenager, falling in love with him as a result. Compared to his ‘great rival’, Shostakovich, he was Mozart compared to Stockhausen in terms of easy on the ear. He simply writes delightful music, even when being dramatic and dark (I’m thinking Montagues and Capulets here!).
I stand by the ‘Mozart’ reference. To me, that’s what Prokofiev always meant: a Mozart for the 20th century… not only in terms of easy on the ear!
