Tο φιλόδοξο έργο του Philip Glass Orion πρωτοπαρουσιάστηκε στο Ηρώδειο το 2004 λίγο πριν τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες. Κεντρική ιδέα του ήταν η “ενότητα των πολιτισμών (trendy τη συγκεκριμένη περίοδο) υπό τον ίδιο ουρανό” και σύμβολό της ο αστερισμός του Ωρίωνα, “ορατός και από τα δυο ημισφαίρια”… Ακούγοντας το γοητευτικό 3ο μέρος με τίτλο China (συνδυασμός παραδοσιακών στοιχείων της χώρας με το ιδίωμά του PG) δεν βλάπτει να θυμόμαστε ένα αρχαίο κινέζικο ρητό – πιθανώς του Κομφούκιου – και το τι θα μπορούσε να σημαίνει για μας σήμερα : “Ο ουρανός δεν έχει δύο ήλιους, ο λαός δεν έχει δύο βασιλιάδες“… 🟡 🟡 The ambitious work Orion by Philip Glass was premiered at the Odeon Of Herodes Atticus in 2004, shortly before the Olympic Games. Its central idea was “unity of civilizations (a trendy concept at that time) under the same sky,” symbolized by the constellation of Orion, “visible from both hemispheres”… When listening to the charming third movement titled ‘China’ — a compelling fusion of traditional Chinese elements with Philip Glass’s own musical idiom — it doesn’t hurt to recall an ancient Chinese proverb, possibly attributed to Confucius, and consider what it might mean for us today: “Heaven has not two suns, the people have not two kings”.

I like Philip Glass a lot but, oddly, in this case I found that the most ‘Chinese’ parts at the beginning were much more enjoyable than the distinctive ‘Glassian’ parts later on – they felt more comical than deep. It is possible, of course, that I have missed the point!
I (think I) know what you mean, and I agree. But that’s the reason why I find this enjoyable : the parts you mention remind me of the Greek light popular (“elafrolaika”) songs of the ’70s – I can easily imagine pipa replaced by …bouzouki, and the whole thing is funny somehow, in the good sense of the word… 😃
