Ο βαθμός στον οποίο είναι γνωστά έργα όπως αυτό στο ελληνικό ακροατήριο (δεν αναφέρομαι στο σημερινό των Μαζωνάκη-Βίσση-Καρβέλα) αλλά και το διεθνές, “λέει κάτι” – στον καθένα απομένει να ορίσει τι είναι αυτό. Έτος σύνθεσής του το 1942, εν μέσω γερμανικής κατοχής, το ύφος είναι μετά-σενμπεργκιανό, προϊόν της ώριμης περιόδου του μέγιστου των Ελλήνων συνθετών. Η Επιστροφή του Οδυσσέα γράφτηκε ως εισαγωγή μιας όπερας που ο Σκαλκώτας δεν ολοκλήρωσε ποτέ. Προκάλεσε …μηδενικό impact στην Ελλάδα της εποχής, και εξακολουθεί επίμονα να το προκαλεί. Ακούγεται συχνότερα από ορχήστρες του εξωτερικού όπως η BBC Symphony Orchestra, εδώ, υπό τη διεύθυνση του Νίκου Χριστοδούλου. 📀 📀 📀 The extent to which works such as this are known, both to the Greek audience (I am not referring to the contemporary of Mazonakis, Vissi, Karvelas) and to the international one, is “telling”; it is up to each individual to decide exactly what this is. Composed in 1942, in the midst of the German Occupation, the work, written in a post-Schoenbergian style, belongs to the mature period of this preeminent Greek composer. The Return of Odysseus was conceived as the overture to an opera which Skalkottas never completed. It made—and, stubbornly, continues to make—zero impact in Greece. It is, however, performed more frequently by orchestras abroad, such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, heard here under the direction of Nikos Christodoulou.
