On this date, March 7, 1875, a very important composer of the twentieth century, Maurice Ravel, was born. Less prolific than other colleagues but with a strong signature and mood for experimentation with forms   – from baroque to the most modern idioms even with jazz – not to mention the minimalistic-before-its-time approach to composition on his famous Bolero. We hear one of his lesser known vocal works: Cinq Melodies Populaires Grecques, based on Greek traditional motifs. Karina Gauvin: soprano. Accompanied by Marc-André Hamelin on the piano.
