FOCUS : BIRTH (1974)

🟡 🟡 I’ve always had a particular soft spot for the Dutch band Focus, especially the music they released during the golden era of progressive rock (they continue to this day, exclusively with keyboardist, flutist, and vocalist Thijs van Leer – guitarist and co-founder Jan Akkerman has been gone since the mid-70s). By typing their name into the blog’s search, one can find some of their own gems from the prog genre. We’re now listening to another one, from their 1974 album Hamburger Concerto. Written by Akkerman.

This song is new to me, but I remember “Hocus Pocus” very well.

I know. That’s the unfortunate thing with so many “one-hit-wonders”.
Even more interesting is that ‘Hocus Pocus’ is known exclusively for the yodeling and the overall “insane” vocal performance. In other words, it is known as a joke.
Imo, the most interesting part comes from the …truly insane guitar solos over there. The things JK is playing on ‘Hocous Pocus’ is every bit as good as the best solos by Zappa or Duane Allman.

I’ve always liked both the vocals and the guitar solos.
