The great soul man would succumb to complications from the accident in 1999 at the age of just 57. A few years after the accident, friends and colleagues (Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Gladys Knight, B.B. King, Phil Collins, Elton John and others) gathered to record a tribute album, covering and performing his songs while raising a sum of money that would go to him and his family.
