The inspiration comes from the pictured Jean-Antoine Watteau’s painting L’Embarquement pour Cythère (The Embarkation for Cythera). It is one of his most difficult and demanding scores for piano, and we hear it in three versions. The great Maurizio Pollini elevates the original version. This is followed by the transcription for string orchestra featuring Branford Marsalis’s soprano saxophone, arranged by Michel Colombier, with the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Andrew Litton. And finally, a little feat: the delightful jazz rendition of the work by the Jacques Loussier Trio (Jacques Loussier piano, Benoit Dunoyer de Segonzac bass, André Arpino drums).
