A kind of obsession Brahms had with Beethoven’s work, made him uncomfortable with composing symphonies. Maybe that’s why he wrote only four… What one gets, of course, by listening to them, has nothing to do with “difficulty”.
A classic example is Allegro Non Troppo, first part of his 4th Symphony: 13 minutes of absolute perfection…

Love this! It swept me off my feet.
That was pretty moving Resa, because this is my all-time favorite symphony.
I can hear and feel why.
Ah wonderful stuff. I think you understated the Beethoven issue though. His 9t solved the so-called ‘Finale problem’. How do you make your fourth movement more powerful than the first. Beethoven pulled out the once-in-a-lifetime trick with the choir. That couldn’t be repeated. So how could anyone do symphonies ever again? Brahms was the one brave enough to try. And what a marvellous set of symphonies he gave us! The fourth is one of my all-time favourites.
