It’s a shame that the punk explosion was accompanied by a wholesale change in the music newspapers’ staff in England—the “old guard” of rock’n’roll writers had to be replaced with mostly young, ignorant * fanatics who simply praised the raw energy and cartoon politics of the scene. As a result, few recognized the class difference between the Damned and others from the same period—IMHO, they just had no peers. What saved them from oblivion was that they managed to release “the first punk album ever”…
* I was much younger than them back in the day …just not ignorant.😇
