Στο Memphis των αρχών των ‘50s ο Bobby “Blue” Bland, ο BB King και η υπόλοιπη χαλαρή παρέα μουσικών που πέρασαν στην ιστορία ως The Beale Streeters, συμμετείχαν στη δημιουργία ενος καινούργιου, ηλεκτρικού ήχου, με στοιχεία από τα blues, τα gospel, την country και την jazz. Έχοντας συμμετάσχει, όπως και άλλοι της παρέας, στην πρώτη άτυπη μπάντα του θρυλικού κιθαρίστα και φίλου, ο Bland θα ξεκίναγε από τα middle ‘50s μια σπουδαία από κάθε άποψη, διάρκειας 4 δεαετιών καριέρα. Ένας λόγος για τον οποίο ο εμβληματικός soul man δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα γνωστός εκτός αφροαμερικανικής κοινότητας είναι ότι αντίθετα με άλλους, επέλεξε να μη μεταπηδήσει στα λευκά ακροατήρια, μένοντας πιστός στη βάση του. Ο Bobby Bland μου είχε κινήσει για πρώτη φορά το ενδιαφέρον όταν, έφηβος όντας, είχα πληροφορηθεί την αγάπη γι’ αυτόν του Bryan Ferry.

In early ’50s Memphis, Bobby “Blue” Bland, BB King and the rest of the loosely knitted team of musicians that went down in history as The Beale Streeters, created a new, electric sound, with elements of blues, gospel, country and jazz. Having participated, like others of the gang, in the first informal band of legendary guitarist and friend, Bland would start a solo career in the middle ’50s, great in any way, which lasted for 4 decades.
One reason why the iconic soul man is not well known outside the African-American community is that, unlike others, he chose not to jump to white audiences, staying true to his base. Bobby Bland first caught my attention as a teenager, having read about Bryan Ferry’s love for him.
