Θα κάνουμε ένα χαλαρό αφιέρωμα στην Cassandra Wilson που μας άφησε απροσδόκητα, ακούγοντας κάτι δικό της κάθε ημέρα, για ένα διάστημα. Ξεκινάμε με ιστορία εν τη γενέσει: το Motherland Pulse δεν είναι μόνο το πρώτο (ουσιαστικά) άλμπουμ στο οποίο ακούγεται η φωνή της Cassandra, αλλά και το ντεμπούτο ως leader μιας από τις σημαντικότερες φυσιογνωμίες της τζαζ των τελευταίων σαράντα χρόνων — του σαξοφωνίστα, συνθέτη και θεωρητικού Steve Coleman, για την πολυσχιδή δραστηριότητα του οποίου θα είχαν γραφτεί βιβλία… αν ζούσαμε σε εποχές θριάμβου του μουσικού πνεύματος. Στο έργο του (σημαντικότατου σολίστα) Steve Coleman, το funk του δρόμου και το hip-hop συνδυάζονται με την παράδοση της τζαζ, διαμορφώνοντας ένα μοναδικά προσωπικό ύφος (όχι ακόμα κατασταλαγμένο εδώ) που διέπεται από μια “μαθηματική” οργάνωση του χρόνου — μοντελοποιημένη άλλοτε πάνω σε αστρονομικούς κύκλους, άλλοτε σε παλμούς του ανθρώπινου σώματος. Πέρα από το No Good Time Fairies με την Cassandra, ακούμε άλλο ένα κομμάτι από το άλμπουμ – The Glide Was In The Ride (από 05:46). 🟡 🟡 We’ll put together a relaxed tribute to Cassandra Wilson, who left us unexpectedly, by listening to something of hers every day for a while. We start with history in the making: Motherland Pulse is not only the first album on which Cassandra’s voice is heard, but also the debut as leader of one of the most important figures in jazz of the last forty years — saxophonist, composer and theorist Steve Coleman, about whose multifaceted activity books would have been written… if we lived in an age of triumph of the musical spirit. In the work of this highly important soloist, street funk and hip-hop combine with the jazz tradition, forming a uniquely personal style (not settled yet here) governed by a “mathematical” organization of time — modeled sometimes on astronomical cycles, sometimes on the pulses of the human body, and so on.
