THE TURTLES : EVE OF DESTRUCTION [1965]

Ένα από τα πιο πολυτραγουδισμένα anti-war anthems των ‘60s, περισσότερο γνωστό από την κλασική βερσιόν – επιτυχία του Barry McGuire. Συνθέτης του τραγουδιού ο P.F. Sloan.

One of the most sung anti-war anthems of the ’60s, best known in the
Barry McGuire’s classic version – hit. P. F. Sloan was the composer of the song.
I choose the
Turtles arrangement, because of my special sympathy for the group. Not at all inferior musically – quite the opposite, I’d say. From their debut album of 1965.

The Eastern world, it is explodin’
Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’
You’re old enough to kill but not for votin’
You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’?
And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin’
But you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
How you don’t believe
We’re on the eve of destruction
Don’t you understand what I’m trying to say
Can’t you feel the fears I’m feeling today?
If the button is pushed, there’s no runnin’ away
There’ll be no one to save with the world in a grave
Take a look around you boy, it’s bound to scare you, boy
And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
How you don’t believe
We’re on the eve of destruction
Yeah, my blood’s so mad, feels like coagulatin’
I’m sittin’ here just contemplatin’
I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation
Handful of senators don’t pass legislation
And marches alone can’t bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin’
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’
And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
How you don’t believe
We’re on the eve of destruction
And think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
Ah, you may leave here for four days in space
But when you return, it’s the same old place
The poundin’ of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace
Hate your next door neighbor but don’t forget to say grace
And you tell me
Over and over and over and over again, my friend
You don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction
No no, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction

I hadn’t heard The Turtles’ version of the song before. It was chilling to listen to it and realize that the song is just as relevant, if not more so, than the day it was written.

It’ s gonna be our bread and butter from now on, one way or the other. As a matter of fact it already is, since 2020. “Normalizing the exception”.

        I wish I could disagree with you, but I can’t. I’m glad I don’t have any grandchildren.

When Marina and I came to the crossroads, some 15 years ago, about having a kid or not, we decided not to, because we kinda saw what was coming – the signs were clear. Imagining what having a 15-year old child would be today, makes my mind stop.

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve thought how fortunate my daughter is to have grown up before cell phones and the internet took over young people’s lives.

I think many of us have the Turtles and their music on our minds now. (Had a small link to one on a recent post, too)
This particular song used to be one of my frequently played ones – back when I played a “folk song” acoustical guitar.
    Thanks for posting this.

Still a most relevant song. Terrific cover.
    I always liked the Turtles.
I met Flo & Eddie (after the Turtles were no more) when I was quite young.
My friend’s father owned a recording studio. They had come in to do a bit with a local Toronto TV host.
The host guy couldn’t sing a note. They tried to teach him a few lines from “Happy Together”.
I never saw/heard anything like it.
Even Flo and Eddie were astounded.
    Long time ago!
    Thanks for he memory!

Thank you Resa! Flo & Eddie [Mark Volman & Howard Keylan] also collaborated with Frank Zappa on his albums 200 Motels and Live At Fillmore East!
