Ο Keith Emerson και το πρώτο του γκρουπ, σε εποχές κοινωνικών κινημάτων και τραγουδιών διαμαρτυρίας αποδομούν αριστοτεχνικά το classic του Leonard Bernstein. Στη διάρκεια παρουσίασής του στο Royal Albert Hall του Λονδίνου, παρόντος του Αμερικανού πρέσβη, οι Nice έβαλαν φωτιά σε μια αμερικάνικη σημαία, δημιουργώντας πανζουρλισμό στο ακροατήριο. Η μπάντα οδηγήθηκε όπως-όπως εκτός σκηνής. Τα μέλη πληροφορήθηκαν, λίγο μετά, την αποβολή τους απ’ το Royal Albert Hall δια βίου. Ο Bernstein …επίσης δεν ενθουσιάστηκε. Σε ερώτηση πώς του φάνηκε η διασκευή, η απάντηση ήταν : “Σιχαίνομαι κυριολεκτικά αυτό που έχουν κάνει. Κατέστρεψαν το έργο μου”… Και κάπως έτσι ξεκινάμε το τριήμερο αφιέρωμά μας στα 250 χρόνια από την ανακήρυξη της αμερικανικής ανεξαρτησίας. 🟡 🟡 In a time of protest songs and social movements Keith Emerson and his first band, are brilliantly deconstructing Leonard Bernstein’s classic. During a live performance of the song at London’s Royal Albert Hall, in front of the American ambassador, The Nice set an American flag on fire, creating pandemonium in the audience. The band was ushered off stage. Its members were informed shortly after that they were banned from Royal Albert Hall for life. Bernstein ... wasn’t thrilled either. Asked what he thought about the Nice cover, his answer was: “I literally loathe what they’ve done. They ‘ve corrupted my work”…And this is how we kick off our three-day tribute to the 250th anniversary of American independence.

I would call this version an interpretation rather than a corruption; however, I didn’t write it! Burning an American flag during a concert is not cool, though.
Well, I suppose burning the flag was a part of political virtue signaling back in the day.
As for Lenny (again …I suppose) he went after The Nice because he wanted to distance himself from full-throttle anti-American spirit. But being the diplomat he was, he focused his attack on the musical side.
Yes, it was. Not that it accomplished much in the grand scheme of things.
To tell the truth, I never liked “activists” of any kind, not since I turned 15 anyway. Especially people burning flags, …cars, stores etc.
Θυμάμαι τον κιθαρίστα David O’List ένα καλοκαίρι στο πολύ καλό “Jam” στη Νάξο που πήγαινα. Μίλαγε λίγο, έπινε πολύ. Ύστερα από 3 δεκαετίες είχε βγάλει τον πρώτο του σόλο δίσκο. Οι ευκαιρίες τής ζωής τού έτυχαν σε πολύ νεαρή ηλικία και τις κλώτσισε όλες. Ενάμιση χρόνο και ενάμιση δίσκο στους The Nice, σε διαρκή κόντρα με τον Keith Emerson, εκδιώχθηκε μετά από καυγά με τον roadie τους. Στην τουρνέ τους με Jimi Hendrix και Pink Floyd έπαιζε διπλοβάρδια με Nice και Floyd, καλύπτοντας τον Syd Barrett που ήδη ήταν χάλια. Την περιζήτητη θέση βεβαίως πήρε τελικά ο κολλητός τους Gilmour. Στη συνέχεια ήταν για μια εβδομάδα κιθαρίστας των Jethro Tull στη θέση του Mick Abrahams αλλά δεν έμεινε. Ιδρυτικό μέλος των Roxy Music, έκατσε ένα εξάμηνο, έφυγε μετά από καυγά με τον ντράμερ. Αργότερα συνεργάστηκε ξανά με τον Ferry.
Διοργανώθηκε και συναυλία προς τιμήν του σε κλάμπ του νησιού μαζί με ντόπια παιδιά. Μαζευτήκαμε καμμιά 200αριά άτομα, έπαιξε τα σόλα του, ήταν εξαιρετικός.

Δυστυχώς αυτή η ηλικία, 18-21, ήταν δύσκολη για πολλούς από μας.

I can’t believe I’ve never heard this before. This is some high-level ‘Underground’ Art.
What we consider underground today could very well have access to the mainstream back then — hence The Nice playing at a venue like Carnegie Hall. What was needed for that to happen was exactly the high level you’re referring to.
Unfortunately, little by little, being underground became synonymous with being an amateur.
I hadn’t thought about that point of ‘little by little’ before…It shows the capture of the ‘art world….’
