THE DOORS : THE END [1967]

Our tribute to music for The End Of The World ends somehow the way it had started : with an “eschatological” song of love and loss.
A proposal from
Marina.

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I’ll never look into your eyes again
Can you picture what will be?
So limitless and free
Desperately in need
Of some stranger’s hand
In a desperate land
Lost in a Roman wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There’s danger on the edge of town
Ride the King’s Highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake, he’s long, seven miles
Ride the snake
He’s old and his skin is cold
The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here and we’ll do the rest
The blue bus is calling us
The blue bus is calling us
Driver, where you taking us?The killer awoke before dawn
He put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door
And he looked inside
“Father?” “Yes, son?” “I want to kill you”
“Mother? I want to…”
Come on baby, take a chance with us
Come on baby, take a chance with us
Come on baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin’ a blue rug, on a blue bus, doin’ a
Come on yeah
Fuck…
Come on baby, come on
Fuck me baby, fuck yeah
Woah
Alright
Kill, kill, kill…
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you’ll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
This is the end

I can still remember the last scene of Francis Ford Coppola Apocalypse Now, haunting and quite a finish for a crazy movie, good but crazy, madness, horror as Marlon Brandon as Kurtz put it.

“The horror” indeed. That film was a punch in the stomach and the song took a whole different perspective. I’d already heard the song before seeing the film, again and again and again and always from the perspective of an end of the world rather than a love ending.

Yes some use of a song made it impossible to see it in an other sense after, still remember seeing that movie in a cinema, a rarity now…:) as you wrote, quite a shock and punch, we were speechless when we got out of the cinema, it was an increasing madness all the way to the end.

Yeah, my husband played this one ad infinitum way back when.

“ad infinitum” sounds very familiar! 😉

Great ending for the End of the World. Interesting how they are many elements of other Doors’ songs that pop in and out of that piece. It has a nice strangeness that you don’t hear much these days.

You are right! Apart from being absolutely mesmerising, this song works also as a kind of matrix.

It’s great. We need more music like it today.
