Το μοναστήρι της Montserrat, 50 χιλιόμετρα βοριοδυτικά της Μπαρτσελόνα, αποτελεί τόπο συρροής προσκυνητών από την εποχή του Μεσαίωνα. Χτισμένο πάνω από προγενέστερο ναό της Αφροδίτης, σε ύψος 700 μέτρων, περιστοιχισμένο από πελώριους βράχους, έχει σαν πρόσθετο πόλο έλξης το περίφημο άγαλμα της Μαύρης Παναγίας.
Από το 1025 εγκαταστάθηκε εκεί μια κοινότητα Βενεδικτίνων από το γειτονικό μοναστήρι της Santa Maria De Ripol. Από το 1409 η Montserrat λειτουργεί ως ανεξάρτητο Αββαείο.
Ανάμεσα στα αρχαία χειρογραφα της μονής υπάρχει και ένας μουσικός κώδικας με κομμάτια που ο σκοπός τους δεν είναι ακριβώς λατρευτικός: προορίζονταν για τους επισκέπτες της μονής που επιθυμούσαν να τραγουδήσουν και να χορέψουν σε ένα χώρο όπου, κανονικά, επιτρέπεται να ακούγονται μόνο θρησκευτικοί ύμνοι.
Έχουμε λοιπόν μια σειρά τραγουδιών και instrumentals που αντιπροσωπεύουν μια “καλλιεργημένη” προσέγγιση στο φοκλόρ της εποχής, χωρίς να προσβάλλουν την ιερότητα του χώρου.

The monastery of Montserrat, 50 km northwest of Barcelona, has been a place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. Built over an earlier temple of Aphrodite, at a height of 700 meters, surrounded by imposing rocks, it has as an additional attraction the famous statue of the Black Virgin Mary.
Since 1025, a Benedictine community has been established there from the neighboring monastery of Santa Maria De Ripol. From 1409 on, Montserrat has operated as an independent Abbey.
Among the ancient manuscripts of the monastery there is a musical code with pieces whose purpose is not exactly worshipful: they were intended for visitors of the monastery who wished to sing and dance in a place where, normally, only religious hymns are allowed.
So we have a series of songs and instrumentals that represent a “cultured” approach to the folk music of the time, without offending the sanctity of space.
We hear two of them, written by anonymous composers. Performed by Ensemble Unicorn, under the direction of Michael Posch.
