On this date, April 7, 1920, the composer, teacher and virtuoso of the sitar, Ravi Shankar, was born in Benares. Apart from being the most famous Indian musician of the 20th century – ambassador of classical music of his country to the Western world, he was also the one who introduced it to some of “our” distinguished musicians, working with them and building bridges and passages between the cultures of East and West.
