🔴 Ας μιλήσουμε λίγο για αληθινή ηλεκτρονική πρωτοπορία : στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1920 ο Friedrich Trautwein, φυσικός, καθηγητής Ακουστικής & Ηλεκτροακουστικής στο Hochschule Für Musik Berln σχεδιάζει την πρωτόλεια βερσιόν του Trautonium. Το παίξιμο γίνεται με το γλίστρημα των δακτύλων σε μια μεταλλική πλάκα, χρησιμεύουσα σαν ηλεκτρονική (άταστη) ταστιέρα, με την ένταση του ήχου (πλησιέστερου σ’ εκείνον ενός πνευστού) να ρυθμίζεται από foot pedal, και την εκφραστική δυνατότητα να εξασφαλίζεται χάρη στη δυνατότητα των δακτύλων για glissando / portamendo και vibrato. To όργανο θα αναπτυχθεί τα επόμενα χρόνια από τον μαθητή του FT, Oskar Sala, κατασκευαστή του Mixtur-Trautonium : χάρη στον εμπλουτισμό του με δυο κανονικά keyboards, και με τη δυνατότητα πολυφωνίας, εναλλαγής δεκάδων (“παράξενων” και μη) ήχων, εφέ, ακόμα και κρουστών, το όργανο λειτουργεί πλέον, από τα early ‘50s σαν ορχήστρα ή μάλλον σαν αυτόνομο στούντιο. Η διασημότερη εμφάνισή του αφορά στην ταινία ‘Τα Πουλιά’ του Hitchock – όλα όσα ακούγονται στη διάρκεια της, συμπεριλαμβονένων των φωνών των ίδιων των πουλιών, πηγάζουν από τα δάχτυλα του Oskar Sala, μοναδικού σολίστ του Mixtur-Trautonium μέχρι το θάνατο του (2002). Κύριος λόγος της μη διάδοσης του οργάνου ήταν, και εξακολουθεί να είναι, το τεράστιο κόστος του. 🔴 Let’s talk a bit about true electronic pioneering: in the late 1920s, Friedrich Trautwein, a physicist and professor of Acoustics & Electroacoustics at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, designed the prototype version of the Trautonium. The instrument is played by sliding the fingers along a metal plate that serves as an electronic fretless fingerboard. The volume of the sound (closest to that of a wind instrument) is controlled by a foot pedal, while expressive possibilities are ensured by the fingers’ ability to perform glissando/portamento and vibrato. In the following years, the instrument was further developed by Trautwein’s student Oskar Sala, who built the Mixtur-Trautonium. Thanks to the addition of two conventional keyboards and the capability for polyphony, instant switching between dozens of (“strange” and ordinary) timbres, effects, and even percussion sounds, the instrument functioned from the early 1950s onward like an orchestra — or rather, like a self-contained studio. Its most famous appearance is in Alfred Hitchcock’s film ‘The Birds’ : every sound heard throughout the movie, including the voices of the birds themselves, came from the fingers of Oskar Sala, the Trautonium’s sole virtuoso until his death in 2002. The main reason the instrument never became widespread was — and still is — its enormous cost.
