MK-O : ARTIFACTS, DROWNING IN DEBTS (2011)

Το Blues For The White Nigger

Blues For The White Nigger is a concept album. It’s dealing with the use of “signifiers” of black culture for the manipulation of white audiences, and the role in this of technology.
If
youth culture operated from the start as a “cultural” industry promoting glorified, self-important and self-marginalized losers, the process is being completed nowadays, thanks to organized autism cultivated through internet.

Painted ceiling, artifacts and precious flair
Sacred feeling, damages beyond repair
I‘m dealing with an innocent man
             – cannot be blamed for what he ‘s made of
I’m dealing with an innocent man
             – cannot be kept from what he claims to be

Can’t you see there’s

No turning back

You tricked yourself in vicious games

Made an angry face against the stars

Traveled so far, moving down the alien trail
The chance is here but you‘re now burned out
Can’t you see there’s

No happy end

No one to catch you when you fall

Sparkling saviors built to make the sale

Made a fool of you, the promise they gave you cannot hold
The chance is here but you‘re now burned out
Easy come but

So hard to go

You ‘re drowned in debts you cannot pay

Gazer running out of empty hope

And there ain’t no insult that you cannot take
The chance is here but you‘re now burned out

The bottom line was probably mostly about making money. Any kind of ‘false identity creation’ was probably just a means to that end. I think some producers also actually liked music too. Sort of complicated, I think.

It’s also about control, by changing the social paradigm : the new model citizen is a de facto glorified, and thus self-marginalised loser, jazzed-up to “superhuman” with the use of technology.

My father taught marketing and was the dean of business at a local college back in the day. When I started learning about Marx and NeoMarxism we had some lively talks. I said ads created the desire whereas he said products give people what they want. Nowadays I’m thinking both perspectives could contain some elements of truth?

It’s a matter of chronological order.🙂 Products give people what they desire after their desire ‘s been formed by ads.

I guess it depends on our worldview and maybe the situation. One could argue that some gifted innovators anticipate what many people will want, while others just brainwash the masses… 😄

I’m thinking this album would be a good one to study in a music appreciation course, particularly the decisions made in conceptualizing and performing it.

Well …it’s a dirty job but someone has to do it – even though [almost] nobody listens.
We’d like to think the most interesting part of this is the music itself.
      Thank you!
