I have a soft spot for the albums (misunderstood by some) that Miles Davis released on his comeback in the ’80s, like 1983’s Decoy. From this we hear a composition by him & John Scofield – his guitar co-stars along with the leader’ s trumpet and Branford Marsalis‘ soprano sax. The song is arranged by Gil Evans.

What a brilliant sound. I don’t have the musical terminology to describe what it is here that I’m hearing but it seems full of intense flavour and deliberate structure. More than a picture it seems to create a sense of space.
Brilliant indeed! Not by chance, it is arranged by Gil Evans, the arranger behind some of MD’s most fascinating albums from the late ’50s to the late ’60s.
