LYRES : HOW DO YOU KNOW / DON’T GIVE IT UP NOW

Το single ‘How Do You Know’ με B-side το ‘Don’t Give It Up Now’ ήταν η παρθενική κυκλοφορία (1979) της γκαράζ μπάντας από τη Βοστώνη της Μασαχουσέτης. 🟡 🟡 The single ‘How Do You Know’ with B-side ‘Don’t Give It Up Now’ was the debut release (1979) of the garage band from Boston, Massachusetts. And in my humble opinion, it’s one of the most exciting debut singles ever released. The same, of course, goes for both little epics by the massively underrated singer-songwriter-keyboardist Jeff Conolly, which we hear in their re-recorded versions from the albums Lyres Lyres (1986) and On Fyre (1984) respectively.

00:00 HOW DO YOU KNOW
I’ve been drinkin’ in Boston now for three years
Stuck in this club, and it only confirms my fears
People told me I was gonna make it
Twenty five years I’ve said…
How do you know?
How do you know, you’re gonna be big?
How do you know, the girls are gonna dig you?
How do you know?
I’ve been drinkin’ in Boston now for three years
Playin’ this garbage, shedding these Rock ‘n Roll tears
People said that I was goin’ crazy
You don’t know the hassles I’ve seen
I’m sayin’ how do you know?
How do you know, you’re gonna be big?
How do you know, you’re girl is gonna dig you?
How do you know?
I’ve been workin’ in Boston now for three years
Waitin’ for the door, things got bad over here
People’s attitude they defaulted
You don’t know the heels I’ve seen
I’m sayin’ how do you know?
How do you know, you’re gonna be big?
How do you know, the girls are gonna dig?
How do you know?
How do you know I’m to blame?
How do you know, I’m goin’ down the drain?
How do you know? How do you know? How do you know?
I’m gonna stick around Boston now one more year
Hangin’ at the Hoodoo, drinkin’ everybody’s beer
Anytime that you come down,
I think that a you will try singin’
I’m sayin’ how do you know?
How do you know, you’re gonna be big?
How do you know, the guys will dig your thing?
How __… you knooooooow? How do you?
How do you know, you’re gonna be big?
How do you know, the girls are gonna dig ?
How do you know?

03:13 DON’T GIVE IT UP NOW
Once there was a time when I thought that I had a lot to say
My nose was in the air
My mind in the clouds, but now they’re gray
I couldn’t understand why people thought I should be put away
Now I wanna change, I’ve been around too long this way
Don’t give it up now
Don’t give it up now
Don’t give it up now
Don’t give it up now
Take what you need, don’t ever give it all away
Everybody’s always influencing each other in some kind of way
Won’t be ashamed, won’t ever let people know
‘Cause what’s really important is that eventually you’re going to go
Don’t give it up now (x8)
Take what you need, don’t ever give it all away
Everybody’s always influencing each other in some kind of way
Won’t be ashamed, won’t ever let people know
‘Cause what’s really important is that eventually you’re going to go
Don’t give it up now
