Τους ακούμε να κάνουν ολόδικά τους δυο all-time classics : Moanin’ (Bobby Timmons) και Caravan (Juan Tizol, Duke Elllington). 📀 📀 📀 The peerless jazz vocal trio of Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks & Annie Ross pioneered the “vocalese” technique starting in the mid-1950s—adapting lyrics to instrumental jazz compositions and transforming them into vocal pieces / songs. Here, we hear them put their own unique stamp on two all-time classics: Moanin’ (Bobby Timmons) and Caravan (Juan Tizol, Duke Ellington). For the latter, the group’s lyricist, Jon Hendricks, created a remarkable expansion of Irving Mills’ original lyrics. The recordings date from 1959 and 1960, respectively.

MOANIN’
Every Mornin’ finds me moanin’
Cuz of all I the trouble I see
Life’s a loosing gamble to me
Ev’ry body knows I moanin’
Every evening I am moanin’
I’m alone and crying the blues
I’m so tired of paying the dues
Ev’ry body knows I’m moanin’
Lord I spend many a days and nights alone with my grief
And I pray, really and truly pray
Somebody will come and bring me relief
Every mornin’ finds me moanin’
Cuz of all I the trouble I see
Life’s a loosing gamble to me
Ev’ry body knows I moanin’
CARAVAN
Night, and stars above are shining bright (across the endless desert wave)
(The sun illuminates the day)
The mystery of their magic light
(And then it seems to pass away)
Shines down upon our caravan
Stars create a map up in the sky (and when you think it’s out of sight)
(The moon illuminates the night)
For man to chart his journey by
(But with reflected solar light)
And guides our desert caravan
(Sun) long before we came to be, the desert bubbled under sea, big as an ocean
(Moon) plenty of days of blistering sunshine dried up the earth while it’s in motion
(Sand) stages and ages and slowly by stages according to natural plan
(Ooh) All that’s left is the sand
(So) and so (long before man came to be)
Little we know the secret of life and where it goes
(Then, each desert sand was the sea)
We ponder secrets no one knows (truly, truly)
Within our desert caravan (truly, truly, truly, truly, truly)
(Through the desert and over the sand)
(Through the desert and over the sand)
The stars are shining, oh so brightly
(Through the desert and over the sand)
(Through the desert and over the sand)
They give direction nightly
(Through the desert and over the sand, always)
For our caravan
The stars are shining brightly
They give direction nightly
(Through the desert and over the sand)
(Through the desert and over the sand)
Sleep upon my shoulder as we creep
(Through the desert and over the sand)
(Through the desert and over the sand)
Across the desert so I may keep
(Through the desert and over the sand, always)
The memory of our caravan
The stars are shining brightly
They give direction nightly
This is so exciting
You are so inviting
Here in this oasis
My heart knows where its place is
(Caravan) you, beside me here beneath the blue
(Caravan) My dream of love is coming true
(Caravan) our caravan, our desert caravan (caravan)
