The Inimitable Kurt Elling with is own unique take on Christmas. I’ve been a HUGE fan of Kurt’s for years and quite honestly thought I had everything he had recorded. But somehow this one escaped my purview possibly just because I don’t usually buy Christmas recordings. But this was such a blessed find. I’m so grateful you shared this. This song is such a terrific find blending a certain saudade into the Christmas music tradition. This happy/sad track with its overlapping snippets of traditional carols like memories of the past gently landing like waves on a beach. The lyrics of direction to “sing a song… look around…” and the refrain of “sing a christmas carol like the children do” suggests a wizened (or jaded) adult that is able to rise about the commercialization and craziness of the holiday look back to the innocence, “joy and beauty” of youth before more “adult” sensibilities and responsibilities had taken over. Ih short, I love this song. You post is a wonderful Christmas gift. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
