Το μάλλον ενοχλητικό ’90s trend των συλλογών με θέμα προκάτ διαθέσεις [‘έρωτας’, ‘πάθος’ ‘χαλάρωση’, ‘εορτασμός’, ‘ονειροπόληση’…] έχει τις ρίζες του στο …μπαρόκ των αρχών του 18ου αι. και τα λεγόμενα character pieces : συλλογές “περιγραφικών” μουσικών έργων, ρεύμα που θα κυριαρχούσε ένα αιώνα αργότερα στην εποχή του ρομαντισμού. Χαρακτηριστικά του είδους τα λεγόμενα Νυχτερινά για πιάνο, που ο Frederic Chopin ανέδειξε όσο κανείς.
Στον Ιρλανδό πιανίστα και συνθέτη John Field ανήκει ωστόσο η τιμή της διαμόρφωσης της φόρμας. Η ένδοξη καριέρα του μαθητή του Muzio Clementi, άγνωστου σχετικά σήμερα, εκτυλίχθηκε μέσα από αλλεπάλληλα ταξίδια [Λονδίνο, Παρίσι, Βιέννη, Αγ. Πετρούπολη, όπου και εγκαταστάθηκε]. Συνθέτες όπως οι Schumann, Brahms, Liszt και φυσικά, ο Chopin, τον μνημόνευαν ανάμεσα στις κύριες επιρροές τους.

The rather annoying ’90s trend of thematic compilations revolving around prefab moods [‘love’, ‘passion’, ‘relaxation’, ‘celebration’, ‘daydreaming’…] has it roots in …early 18th century’s baroque and the so-called character pieces : collections of “descriptive” music works, a trend that would become dominant a century later in the romantic era. Typical of the genre are the so-called Nocturnes for piano, which Frederic Chopin highlighted more than anyone.
Irish pianist and composer John Field, however, is considered to be the one who shaped the form. The glorious career of Muzio Clementi’s student, relatively unknown today, unfolded through successive trips [London, Paris, Vienna, St. Petersburg, where he settled]. Composers such as Schumann, Brahms, Liszt and, of course, Chopin, cited him among their main influences.
