One of the forms in which Joannes Brahms stood out [although obscurely] was that of the motet, a polyphonic vocal composition, sacred or secular, the first tokens of which are found in the 13th century and its heyday in the Renaissance period.
We hear the exquisite motet for mixed choir Warum ist das Licht gegeben [“Why the Light is given”] performed by The Corydon Singers under Matthew Best’s direction.

Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery,
and life unto the bitter in soul;
which long for death, but it cometh not;
and dig for it more than for hid treasures;
which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad,
when they can find the grave?
Why is light given to a man whose way is hid,
and whom God hath hedged in?
