Μπορεί σήμερα να φαίνεται εκτός τόπου, αλλά στο Παρίσι των μέσων του 18ου αι. έργα όπως η όπερα Κάστωρ και Πολυδεύκης γίνονταν αφορμή για πολώσεις και αντιπαραθέσεις …λεκτικές τουλάχιστον.
Το έργο του Rameau είχε την πρεμιέρα του στις 24 Οκτωβρίου του 1737. Aντίπαλοι εδώ ήταν οι μοντερνιστές οπαδοί του μεγάλου συνθέτη-θεωρητικού [ο Diderot ανάμεσά τους] και οι συντηρητικοί υποστηρικτές του Jean Baptiste Lully. Κάτι απ’ την πρωτοτυπία της σύνθεσης διακρίνεται από το πόσο “σύγχρονη” αρμονικά ακούγεται η συναρπαστική άρια της Πριγκίπισσας Tellaire – Jennifer Smith.
It may seem out of place today, but in mid-18th century Paris, works such as the opera Castor and Pollux became the cause of polarizations and controversies… verbal at least.
Rameau’ s work had its premiere on October 24, 1737. Opponents here were the modernist followers of the great composer-theorist [Diderot among them] and the conservative supporters of Jean Baptiste Lully.
Something of the composition’s originality can be perceived by how “contemporary” the fascinating aria of Princess Tellaire – Jennifer Smith – sounds in terms of harmony.
