Μπορεί ένα άλμπουμ να είναι “ατμοσφαιρικό” και ταυτόχρονα φιλόδοξο; Φυσικά, άλλωστε λίγα κλισέ είναι τόσο άστοχα όσο το περί “ατμοσφαιρικής μουσικής” : το αντίθετό της, η …μη ατμοσφαιρική μουσική, απλούστατα, δε νοείται. H πολυσυζητημένη “ατμόσφαιρα”, αν πρόκειται όντως για τέτοια, δεν παράγεται από ήχους και εφέ, αλλά από τις νότες : ο ίδιος πιανίστας, στο ίδιο πιάνο, θα δημιουργήσει άλλη ατμόσφαιρα, ανάλογα με τη σύνθεση που ερμηνεύει. Και είναι ακριβώς οι νότες που κάνουν το Places του Jan Garbarek (1976) ένα κομψοτέχνημα ατμοσφαιρικής jazz, με τη μπάντα που συμπληρώνουν οι John Taylor (όργανο, πιάνο), Bill Connors (κιθάρα) και Jack DeJohnette (ντραμς) να ακούγεται σε στιγμές σαν ένα είδος εναλλακτικών Van Der Graaf Generator της ιδίας περιόδου …χωρίς τον Hammill. 🔥🔥🔥 Can an album be “atmospheric” and at the same time ambitious? Of course, after all few clichés are as misguided as the one about “atmospheric music”: the opposite of that …non-atmospheric music, quite simply, is inconceivable. The much talked about atmosphere, if it truly is such, is produced not so much by sounds and effects, but by notes : the same pianist, on the same piano, will create a different atmosphere, depending on the composition he interprets. And it is precisely the notes that make Jan Garbarek’s Places (1976) a masterpiece of atmospheric jazz, with the band completed by John Taylor (organ, piano), Bill Connors (guitar) and Jack DeJohnette (drums) sounding at times like a kind of alternative Van Der Graaf Generator of the same era …without Hammill.
