IGGY POP : MASS PRODUCTION (1977)

📀 📀 Iggy in the role of “Bowie’s guinea pig” (his own description) from an album that hasn’t been listened to as much as it deserves. The Idiot was a kind of sonic draft for the Berlin Trilogy — its sessions, produced by DB, were completed just one month before those for Low began. Beyond historical details, ‘Mass Production’ (music by Bowie – lyrics by Pop) is perhaps the bleakest piece the great artist has ever performed. And, in every respect, a masterpiece.

Before you go, do me a favour
Give me a number of a girl almost like you
With legs almost like you
I’m buried deep in mass production
And you’re not nothing new
I like to ride along the freeways
See the smokestacks belching
Breasts turn brown
So warm and so brown
Though I try to die
You put me back on the line
Oh, damn it to hell
Back on the line
It’s hell back on the line
Again and again
I’m back on the line
And I see my face here
And it’s there in the mirror
And I’m up in the air
But I’m down on the ground
By the way
I’m going for cigarettes
And since you’ve gotta go
Won’t you do me one favour?
Won’t you give me that number
Won’t you get me that girl?
Yeah, she’s almost like you
Yes, she’s almost like you
And I’m almost like him
Yes, I’m almost like him
Yes, I’m almost like him, I’m almost like him
I’m almost like him, I’m almost, almost, almost, almost, almost
Yes, I’m almost like him
Yes, I’m almost like him

The dirge-like quality of this is mesmerizing.

A lament …mechanically supported. One of the songs that have “defined” my musical self. Thank you Liz!

Not sure why, but the Player has stopped working again. I just got a new computer, so that may have something to do with it. Just wanted you to know!

I ‘ve given the problem to my “technical assistant” Resa. Still no answer apart from the one he gave me today “it must be her new computer”. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.
