GUNTHER SCHULLER : CONCERTINO FOR JAZZ QUARTET AND ORCHESTRA – part 1: SLOW

Gunther Schuller, Journey Into Jazz [2008] των Boston Modern Orchestra Project, υπό τη διεύθυνση του Gil Rose.

We’re in the ’50s. The American composer
Gunther Schuller [photo] envisions musical forms that combine the structural excellence of classical with the spaciousness of jazz. He ‘d give the name Third Stream to this new genre, writing and recording with his orchestra and the famous Modern Jazz Quartet [John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (double bass), Connie Kay (drums)] a series of compositions that defined it.
We hear the first part of one of them. From the album
Gunther Schuller, Journey Into jazz [2008] by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, under the direction of Gil Rose.

    The operative word is “Cool”!
I wasn’t expecting exactly this. He has woven so much into this piece.
10th Victim meets outer space in a jazz club & James Bond walks by?
    Love the vibes and brushes.
    Incredibly competent musicians.
