We’re in the ’50s. The American composer Gunther Schuller envisions musical forms that combine the structural excellence of classical with the spaciousness of jazz. He ‘d give the name Third Stream to this new genre, writing and recording with his orchestra and the famous Modern Jazz Quartet – John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (double bass), Connie Kay (drums) – a series of compositions that defined it.
