His work marks the transition from Renaissance music to the Baroque, and has influenced both his contemporaries and later composers, such as Heinrich Schütz (his pupil and the greatest German composer of the period before Bach). The otherwordly, enchanting Litaniae Beatae Mariae Virginis, a work published only after the composer’s death, presents him at the height of his dramatic expressiveness.
