GIACOMO CARISSIMI (1605-1674) : O VULNERA DOLORIS

From the great Italian master of early Baroque,
Giacomo Carissimi, an unusual case of monophonic motet, brilliant nevertheless, for bass singer and basso continuo. Performed by Garrick Comeaux, Andrea Damiani accompanies οn theorbe – a kind of baroque lute.

Odd to my ear, because I never heard of a Motet before. The bass voice is unusual. I’m glad to have heard this. Thank you!

Motets are usually polyphonic and (again, usually) based on sacred texts. They are one of the most astounding music forms in my opinion. I could spend my entire life listening exclusively to motets (no, seriously!) 😊
