The surprising thing about Garbage is that …they continue to exist, with the original line-up unchanged since their formation in 1993. This, in spite of the fact that Americans Duke Erikson, Butch Vig, Steve Marker were already veterans by pop standards [42, 38 and 34 years old respectively], with backgrounds in other groups. The only [barely] qualified in terms of age was Scotswoman Shirley Manson, 27 at the time.
It is with a touch of nostalgia that I hear this song, typical of the mid ’90s, from their debut album.
I’m only happy when it rains
I’m only happy when it’s complicated
And though I know you can’t appreciate it
I’m only happy when it rains
You know I love it when the news is bad
Why it feels so good to feel so sad?
I’m only happy when it rains
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains
I feel good when things are goin’ wrong
I only listen to the sad, sad songs
I’m only happy when it rains
I only smile in the dark
My only comfort is the night gone black
I didn’t accidentally tell you that
I’m only happy when it rains
You’ll get the message by the time I’m through
When I complain about me and you
I’m only happy when it rains
Pour your misery down (Pour your misery down)
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down (Pour your misery down)
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down (Pour your misery down)
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down
You can keep me company
As long as you don’t care
I’m only happy when it rains
You wanna hear about my new obsession?
I’m riding high upon a deep depression
I’m only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me

This was one of the ‘big’ albums that brought me back into pop after an extended excursion into choral, chants and classical keyboard.
I guess pop is mostly about youth but I think it would be nice if that perception changed. At age 61 yrs I still have an original tune or two I’d like to see properly produced and ‘hit.’ Probably won’t happen but the dream isn’t entirely gone. 😄
I don’t think pop is mostly about youth. I don’t think “youth” is mostly about youth either.
I believe a person contains his “young” and “old” self at any age – that’s how I always felt anyway.
The mystery of the self. That was my original PhD thesis topic but they steered me away into something simpler! Probably just as well. 😄
Love this! Never heard it before. Thank you!
