Written for the theatrical play Izeÿl, an Indo-inspired melodrama highly fashionable during the French Belle Époque, it tells the story of the forbidden, tragic love between the sacred dancer Izeÿl and an Indian prince. The title role was famously performed by Sarah Bernhardt.
