“The Sad stream” is the title in English of the song Chopin composed at the age of 21, with lyrics by the Polish poet and family friend Stefan Witwicki. We hear it performed by mezzo-soprano Anna Haase.

River from a foreign land,
Why are your waters so troubled?
Have your banks somewhere collapsed,
Or have old, old snows melted?
The snows still lie in the mountains,
My banks bloom with flowers,
But there, at my source,
A mother weeps over my spring.
Seven daughters she cherished,
Seven daughters she buried,
Seven daughters in the garden,
Their heads facing the sunrise.
Now she communes with spirits,
Asks about her children’s comfort,
Wets their graves with tears,
And sings mournful songs.
