DAVID BOWIE, ARCADE FIRE : THERE IS A HAPPY LAND, GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS

Από το …And I’ll Scratch Yours, του 2013, άλμπουμ με διασκευές τραγουδιών του PG, από καλλιτέχνες που τραγούδια τους είχε ο ίδιος διασκευάσει στο προγενέστερό του ‘Scratch My Back’. 🟡 🟡 Two sides of nostalgia for childhood innocence: one captured by a 19-year-old David Bowie on his self-titled debut album, released in 1967. The other by Peter Gabriel in his anti-war song ‘Games Without Frontiers’, released thirteen years later. We hear it here (at 03:13) in a cover version by Arcade Fire, with Win Butler, Régine Chassagne taking on the roles of Gabriel, Kate Bush respectively. From the 2013 album …And I’ll Scratch Yours, a collection of covers of PG songs by artists whose own tracks he had previously covered on his earlier album ‘Scratch My Back’.

There is a happy land where only children live
They don’t have the time to learn the ways of you sir, Mr. Grownup
There’s a special place in the rhubarb fields underneath the leaves
It’s a secret place and adults aren’t allowed there Mr. Grownup
Go away sir
Charlie Brown got’s half a crown, he’s gonna buy a kite
Jimmy’s ill with chicken pox, and Tommy’s learned to ride his bike
Tiny Tim sings prayers and hymns, he’s so small we don’t notice him
He gets in the way but we always let him play with us
Mother calls, but we don’t hear
There’s lots more things to do
It’s only 5 o’clock, and we’re not tired yet
But we will be very shortly
Sissy Steven plays with girls, someone made him cry
Tony climbed a tree and fell, trying hard to touch the sky
Tommy lit a fire one day, nearly burned the field away
Tommy’s mum found out, but he put the blame on me and Ray
There is a happy land where only children live
You’ve had your chance and now the doors are closed sir, Mr. Grownup
Go away sir
Boo, de boo, de boo, de boo dup
Boo, de boo, de boo, de boo dup
Boo, de boo, de boo, de boo dup

Whistling tunes
We hide in the dunes by the seaside
Whistling tunes
We’re kissing baboons in the jungle
It’s a knockout
If looks could kill, they probably will
In games without frontiers, war without tears
If looks could kill, they probably will
In games without frontiers, war without tears
Games without frontiers, war without tears

Andre has a red flag, Chiang Ching’s is blue
They all have hills to fly them on except for Lin Tai Yu
Dressing up in costumes, playing silly games
Hiding out in treetops, shouting out rude names
Whistling tunes
We hide in the dunes by the seaside
Whistling tunes
We piss on the goons in the jungle
It’s a knockout
If looks could kill, they probably will
In games without frontiers, war without tears

In games without frontiers, war without tears
