Στην Συμφωνία Δωματίου No 1, σημαντικότερο ίσως έργο της πρώτης περιόδου του Schoenberg, η καινοτομία αφορά κυρίως στο ηχητικό σκέλος : ο Αυστριακός συνθέτης απομακρύνεται από τη γιγαντιαίων διαστάσεων μετα-ρομαντική ορχήστρα επιλέγοντας ένα 15μελές σύνολο [“δωματίου”] ενώ μουσικά κινείται ακόμα σε τονικό ύφος. In Chamber Symphony No 1, maybe the most important work of Schoenberg’s first period, innovation is more about the sonic part: the Austrian composer moves away from the gigantic post-romantic orchestra by choosing a 15-member ensemble [“chamber”] while musically still working in tonal style.
