On the occasion of the latest “femicide” and the discussion about the legal protection of the term (most recent form of instrumentalization of death for “political” use) and our discussion here at the blog, we hear some of the many versions of the “archetypal” murder song, including that of Billy Roberts (1963 – pic. right). It is followed by the ones by Johnny Rivers (1968), Billy Preston (1973, with pacifist/anti-war message), Nick Cave (1986) and, with a different title (“Flower Punk”), the demolition of flower power spirit by Frank Zappa (1968).
00:00 BILLY ROBERTS – HEY JOE
Hey Joe, where you goin’ with that gun in your hand?
Hey Joe, I said where you goin’ with that gun in your hand? (all right)
I’m goin’ down to shoot my old lady
You know I cought her messin’ around with another man, yeah
I’m goin’ down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin’ around with another man
And that ain’t too cool
Hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman down, you shot her down now
Hey Joe, I heard you shot your old lady down, you shot her down in the ground, yeah
Yes, I did, I shot her
You know I cought her messing around, messing around town
Yes, I did, I shot her
You know I cought my old lady messing around town
And I gather the gun
I shot her
02:27 JOHNNY RIVERS – HEY JOE
Hey Joe, where you going with your eyes closed?
Hey Joe, where you going with your eyes closed?
Can’t you tell you’re going anywhere the wind blows
Hey Joe, tell me where you’re gonna run too?
Ah, Joe, where you gonna run too?
Makes no difference, Joe, there gonna find you
Hey Joe, will you search your whole life through?
Hey Joe, will you search your whole life through?
Just to find that the truth is right there inside you
Ah, Joe, tell me what you gonna do?
Hey Joe, tell me what you gonna do?
If you know yourself, Joe, they just can’t touch you
06:31 NICK CAVE – HEY JOE
Hey Joe,
Where you going with that gun in your hand?
Hey Joe,
Where you going with that gun in your hand?
I’m gonna shoot my baby,
I caught her messin round
With another man
Hey Joe,
I heard you shot your baby down
Hey Joe,
I heard you shot your baby down
Yes I did I shot her,
I went and put her
In the ground
Hey Joe,
Where you gonna run to now?
Hey Joe,
Where you gonna run to now?
I’m heading way down South
Where I can be free
I’m heading Mexico way,
No hangman’s about to put a leash around me
10:13 BILLY PRESTON – HEY JOE
Hey, brother
Where you goin’ with that stick in your hand?
He said, ‘Goin’ over here
Goin’ to destroy another man’s land’
‘Cause one man but nothing to other man but all
Together we stand and divided we fall
It’s sad to know today
People aren’t willing to show a little love for you
(Love)
And we need more love
(Love)
We all need love
(Love)
That sustains enough love
(Love)
Gimme some love
(Love)

Callin’, buddy, I want love
(Love)
‘Cause
I loved the most, I paid the price that cost
Too much for freedom
Look, just understand, I’m a man
I come from that same mother called nature
Yeah
I’ll tell you what’s wrong, I’m was born to be strong
To be tied down, I can’t stand it
Listen, wrong or right, black or white
We all deserve an equal right
Hey, brother
Learn how to live with one another, ya
Hey, brother
Hey, brother
Learn how to live with one another
Hey, sister
15:01 FRANK ZAPPA – FLOWER PUNK

I’m goin’ to the love-in to sit & play my bongos in the dirt.
Yes, I’m goin’ to the love-in to sit & play my bongos in the dirt.
Hey Punk, where you goin’ with that hair on your head?
Hey Punk, where you goin’ with that hair on your head?

FZ on the left:
It’s one of the most exciting things that’s ever happened to me. You know, every time I think about how lucky I am to be in the rock & roll industry, it’s SO exciting. You know, when I first got into the rock & roll business I could barely even play the changes to this song on my, on my guitar. But now I’m very proficient at it, I can play the guitar, I can strum it rhythmically, I can sing along with my guitar as I strum. I can strum, sing, dance, I can make merry fun all over the stage. And you know, it’s so wonderful to… It’s wonderful to feel that I’m doing something for the kids, because I know that the kids and their music are where it’s at. The youth of America today is so wonderful… And I’m proud to be a part of this gigantic mass deception. I hope she sees me twirling, yes… I hope she sees me dancing and twirling, I will say: “Hello, dolly!” Is the song over?
FZ on the right:
Boy, this is really exciting, making a rock & roll record. I can’t even wait until our record comes out and the teen-agers start to buy it. We’ll all be rich and famous! When my royalty check comes I think I’m going to buy a Mustang. No, I think I’ll… I think I’ll get a Corvette. No, I think I’ll get a Harley Davidson. No, I don’t think I’ll buy any of those cars. I think what I will do is I will buy a boat. No, that wouldn’t be good either. I think, ah, I’ll go into real estate. I think I would like to… I think I would like to buy La Cienega Boulevard. No, that wouldn’t do any good. Gee, I wonder if they can see me up here, twirling my tambourine and dancing…
Maybe after the show one of the girls who sees me up here, singing and twirling my tambourine and dancing, will like me. And she will come over to me and I will walk… I will walk up to her and I will smile at her and I will impress her and I will say: “Hello, baby, what’s a girl like you doing in a place like this? I’m from a rock & roll band, I think we should… “
Is the song over?
Center mumbling:
Ay, ay!
Mingia!
There she is!
Ay!
Buirote.
When do we get paid for this?
Ay, ay!… papa… huevos
Huevos?
Rock, bop, rock & roll
Rock, bop…
One more time!
Un…
Stop sloppy rock & roll
Bop bop bop!
YEAH! WHEEE!
