Η “εμβληματική” εκτέλεση της BSM εμφανίστηκε ξανά πέρυσι, στο soundtrack της απολαυστικής ταινίας του Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Joni Mitchell‘s song was first recorded by Buffy Sainte-Marie on her album Fire & Fleet & Candlelight [1967].
It was the version that would become [even more] famous thanks to the soundtrack of the 1970 film The Strawberry Statement. In the same year, the songwriter’s interpretation would be released on the album Ladies Of The Canyon.
BSM’s “iconic” performance reappeared last year, on the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino’s delightful film, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood.
00:00 The Circle Game [Mitchell] 04:55 The Circle Game [Sainte-Marie]
Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game
Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like, when you’re older, must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game
Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town
And they tell him,
Take your time, it won’t be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game
So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There’ll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Legendary!
You said it!
Oh, yes, her songs reflecting social ideals will live forever! 🙂
I don’t know about the ideals …but the songs definitely will!😉
The ideals are outdated but the music is beautiful 😊
As a Canadian, super proud of these two fantastic women, I could not pass by this post!
They are so very different, each with their particular voice.
I think the lyrics are timeless, frankly…
Well, you just have to be proud about them… Thank you for your comment.
Iconic women singing from the carousel of time, and I love them both…. so many great songs are now flooding my brain.
I must say Buffy’s newer “Spirit of the Wind” is not just my fave song of hers, but one of my all time fave songs!
I just watched the video. The song is absolutely fantastic, and so is Buffy!
Thank you!
You are welcome!
The throat singer really fills in an authenticity. I’m just so impressed with the whole production, all the players, the song and of course, Buffy.
